SOLIHULL, England – Shoppers at the newest Sainsbury’s location might not notice the LED lighting or the recycled materials used to construct the store, but that’s okay with Sainsbury’s, which recently opened what it is calling “Britain’s greenest convenience store,” MeatInfo website reports.

The store, located in Solihull, England, features double glazing, LED lighting, natural refrigeration and solar panels. “It has been a great achievement to fit all of this technology into such a small store. Each one has been selected to help us reduce our environmental impact and achieve reduced carbon and energy savings,” said Paul Crewe, head of sustainability, emerging and energy for Sainsbury’s.

The Solihull store is part of the company’s goal to lower its carbon emissions 30% by 2020. “We will be monitoring its performance closely over the coming months and hope it will provide an important blueprint for future Sainsbury’s Local stores,” said Crewe.

The new store brought in 25 jobs and will support local community and charity groups. In 2012, Sainsbury’s said that its growth projections will likely add 10,000 new positions over three years, plus 87 new locations last year and this year.
