NEW YORK - Walmart has launched a test service in San Jose, California, that allows shoppers to order fresh food on its website for home delivery, the Financial Times reports.

The pilot service allows customers to order fresh produce, meat, seafood and bread for home delivery at an average fee of $5 to $10.

Walmart declined comment on the duration of the test and its assessment of the online grocery market. Previously, it has sold dried and packaged food for delivery from its online store.

The move follows a similar test program conducted by Amazon, which began selling groceries for home delivery to Seattle residents via its AmazonFresh service.

Some grocery chains have begun offering home delivery in populated cities where the service is cost effective. Additionally, FreshDirect and Peapod have been expanding their reach into several U.S. states, reporting 20 percent year-on-year sales growth.

Walmart is working to revitalize sales after seven consecutive quarters of sales decline at U.S. stores open at least a year.
