MILFORD, Conn. – Subway, the largest restaurant chain on the planet, lost stores in the United States in 2016, CNN Money reports. With more than 40,000 shops across the world, Subway has long had the most locations of any other restaurant chain. McDonald’s comes in second with around 36,000 units across the globe.

But last year, Subway shuttered more U.S. locations than it opened, meaning its store count overall dipped slightly. Today, around 26,744 Subways operate in the United States, down 359 units. U.S. sales also declined to around $11.3 billion in 2016, compared to $11.5 billion the year before.

Subway attributed the decreases to a “focus on international growth. Subway stores outside of the United States experienced a 3.7% increase from 2015, registering $5.8 billion in sales in 2016.

The chain told CNN Money that it had plans to jumpstart U.S. growth. “Going into 2017, we are undertaking an exciting transformation that includes introducing new and improved products, creating an even greater customer experience, refining operations, and positioning Subway franchisees for continued success,” said the company in a statement.
