Chipotle begins offering delivery through partnership with Postmates app.

April 24, 2015

DENVER – QSR-darling Chipotle announced ton an analyst call this week that they are now offering delivery, thanks to a new partnership with Postmates, an app-based delivery service. Customers will now be able to place online or mobile orders for Chipotle delivery in any of the 67 cities served by Postmates.

It’s worth noting that other third-party operators have previously attempted to deliver from Chipotle restaurants, but the company has attempted to shut them down, due to concerns over quality and consistency of service. Postmates was also selected by Starbucks earlier this year to be the coffee giant’s third-party service for their anticipated rollout of delivery later this year.

According to news reports, the announcement comes as Chipotle works on improvements to its mobile ordering and payment options. Tomorrow, Chipotle plans to launch an order-ahead app for Apple Watch and is also prioritzing new systems for mobile payment, including the use of Apple Pay in restaurants and through the iOS app, and potentially Google Wallet within the Android app.

On the Tuesday call, Chipotle’s CFO Jack Hartung said that online ordering, including catering and Burritos by the Box for larger groups, accounted for about 6.6% of the company’s Q1 sales. The recent announcements are sure to boost that number, and Hartung suggested that catering sales in particular had a lot of room for growth.

The company is also relaunching its website to make it more mobile friendly and is preparing to roll-out a new marketing campaign highlighting the high-quality, minimally-processed ingredients used by the chain.
