The Road to EMV on the Forecourt

Webinar will lay the groundwork for fuel retailers making EMV upgrades to the forecourt.

April 24, 2015

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – With the much-discussed EMV liability shift coming this October 2015, retailers are already well on the way to install new chip-enabled payment terminals inside their stores. But, for fuel retailers, the inside terminals are just the beginning when it comes to EMV compliance. Two-and-a-half years from now – October 2017 – is the date for the liability shift for payments at automated fueling dispensers (AFD).

According to an education session at last week’s NACS State of the Industry Summit, the convenience and fuel retailing industry will pay more than $3.5 billion to further protect consumer payment card data, as part of the massive EMV liability shift beginning in October. In the session, Conexxus Executive Director Gray Taylor emphasized that forecourt installation is a particular challenge, as it will generally necessitate multiple installation days and potential upgrades of data transmission lines to accommodate the updated systems, in addition to significant equipment costs.

With an expected cost of anywhere from a few thousand dollars to a complete replacement of all AFDs, forecourt EMV upgrades represent a significant commitment by retailers.   This makes it absolutely necessary for retailers to understand what is involved in forecourt EMV upgrades and to develop a plan for compliance.

Conexxus is hosting a free webinar on May 7, at noon (EDT), addressing “EMV on the Forecourt.” The session will be led by Tim Weston, senior product manager – payment initiatives, at Wayne Fueling, and he will outline the three major elements required for upgrading: dispensers, forecourt communications and site EMV transaction enablement.
