Fill Up and a Hair Cut

At the Tank & Cut in Germany, customers can get gasoline and a new look.

CONSTANCE, Germany – The marriage of hair cutting and gasoline pumps has gotten off to a great start, said the owner of Tank & Cut, a new hybrid service station and hair salon, the Sudkurier reports.

Ralf Mehlmann opened the Tank & Cut, which also boasts food and a car wash, earlier this year. He plans to launch 10 more in 2013, with another 100 next year. “I never had time to go to the hair salon,” Mehlmann told Petrol Plaza News. “But anyone with a car has to go to the petrol station. Why not combine the two?”

Not everyone is thrilled with the combination. Matthias Moser, director of the Professional Association of Hairdressers and Cosmetics, said he wasn’t sure the concept would work. The association also wondered whether the more inexpensive prices at the Tank & Cut would undercut other small hair salons.

“I get petrol, maybe buy a few gummy bears and then go to my hairdresser,” said Moser, adding that he doubted the idea would appeal to new customers, given the plethora of fast haircut shops already out there.

Also skeptical about the Tank & Cut is the Federal Association of Petrol Stations and Commercial Car Washes. “You have to try something new, but whether the customer will accept this remains to be seen,” said Sigrid Pook with the association.
