ALTOONA, Penn. – From chili to milkshakes and everything in between, regional fast-food chains offer hidden gems to both locals and tourists alike. First We Feast.com recognizes the charms of limited geographical chains with its “19 Bucket-List Regional Fast-Food Chains to Try Before You Die.” Making the list are two convenience store chains, showing just how good c-store fare has become—and how ardent its fans are.

At Sheetz, headquartered in Altoona, Penn., Ross Scarano, deputy editor at Complex Life, found its sandwiches and other menu items to be well worth a stop. “In Western Pennsylvania, the combination gas station and made-to-order sandwich-and-sides emporium inspires fandom that parallels the Philadelphia area’s obsession with Wawa,” he wrote. Scarano enjoys the “hot meatball sub—saucy and with spongy meatballs, like in a cheap Italian wedding soup. My brother likes the mac-and-cheese bites and the pretzel breakfast sandwich.”

Meanwhile, down South in Louisiana, Danny and Clyde’s offers wonderful traditional po-boys, according to Jean-Paul Bourgeois, the chef at Blue Smoke. “Do not be distracted by plates, wraps and other sides. Simply focus on the trinity of the traditional offerings: shrimp, roast beef and gravy, and fried oyster placed on a semi-chewy Leidenheimer loaf,” he wrote. Bourgeois found the food paralleled the uniqueness of the chain being located in gas stations. “This is particularly useful on days when you are preparing to hunt or fish. With one stop you can gas up your truck and boat, get breakfast for the road, and snag a po-boy for later,” he concluded.
