Pepsi to Launch ‘Real Sugar’ Selections

This summer, Pepsi products sweetened with sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup will hit shelves.

PURCHASE, N.Y. – PepsiCo will ditch the high fructose corn syrup for real sugar in three Pepsi-Cola products, USA Today reports. Pepsi Made With Real Sugar, Pepsi Vanilla Made With Real Sugar and Pepsi Wild Cherry Made With Real Sugar will be in stores this summer.

The move comes as the carbonated beverage market continues to spiral downward. The major soft drink makers have been busy coming up with new products and marketing strategies to turn around the decline, which has been spurred in part by consumers losing interest in artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup. Even diet soda, once the linchpin of the industry, has suffered losses in recent years.

Also pressuring the big soda companies are niche soft drink makers, which appeal to a growing number of consumers. For example, Jones Soda uses pure cane sugar, while Zevia adds stevia to its diet soda.

Whether or not sugar is better for you than high fructose corn syrup is a matter of debate. “There are some consumers who seem to gravitate to ‘sugar,’ though in reality high fructose corn syrup is also an excellent sweetener,” said John Sicher, editor of Beverage Digest.
