SYDNEY, Australia – Tech-savvy Australians will soon be able to pay for their daily coffee as simply as tapping their reusable SmartCup, which is embedded with smart payment capabilities.

Customers who purchase one of environmentally friendly SmartCups, designed by Australian product innovator Frank Green, can download the CafePay smartphone app. Then they simply order their coffee as usual and pay for it with a swipe of their cup, using tap payment. Customers can pre-pay for coffees or gift them to others via the app, which also includes loyalty rewards from participating coffee shops.

According to news reports, the cup itself has a double-walled thermo plastic outer layer to better insulate the hot drinks and is dishwasher safe and stain-, odor- and spill-resistant. A portion of every SmartCup purchase will also be donated to international environmental non-profit.

And for those stateside who have their own preferred reusable drink containers, Saturday is the perfect time to take a favorite beverage container into any 7-Eleven store for the first-ever first "Bring Your Own Cup Day." From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time on April 11, customers can fill up any cup they bring into 7-Eleven for the $1.49 average price of a 22-ounce medium Slurpee. (And, yes, 7-Eleven already tried this promotion in Australia!)
