MIAMI, Fla. - U.S. Rep. Connie Mack (R-FL) launched a petition drive last week that calls for the building of the Keystone XL pipeline.

The SunHerald.com writes that Mack, who is also running for Senate against current Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), said the high gasoline prices could be alleviated if the pipeline were constructed.

Mack, who is the chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, responded last month to news that the Obama administration is planning to expedite the southern half of the Keystone XL pipeline. "Now we know the Obama administration is capable of fast-tracking Keystone. Mr. President, if you are serious about taking every available avenue to lower gas prices, fast track the rest of Keystone XL. Buying needed oil from our allies is good foreign policy, and the jobs it will create are needed now," he said in a statement.

Mack launched his petition at a local Miami Mobil station, owned by Michael Mendez. To him, gas prices are a global issue and are not a reflection of who??s in office.

"These gas prices, to me, it doesn??t matter who??s in office," Mendez told the news source, adding, "Gas prices always go up throughout the year. And then it??s going to come down. And then everyone??s not going to say anything for a little while."

Mendez added, however, that Mack??s petition is "better than doing nothing."

The news source writes that a recent Florida poll showed that statewide voters blame oil companies and global market forces for current gasoline prices.
