Sheetz Loses Interest in Wine Kiosks

Initial interest has faded due to in-store space concerns and the current structure of the PLCB's program.

ALTOONA, PA - To put a wine kiosk inside a Sheetz store would mean something else would have to go, and we??re not talking about a small shelf unit.

The Altoona Mirror reports that the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) asked the convenience store chain if it was interested in installing its wine kiosks. At first blush, Sheetz was interested, but now after doing their homework, the answer is no.

"The performance of the equipment was an issue, and another issue for us was their physical size, they are huge," Louie Sheetz, executive vice president of marketing, told the newspaper. "We have a small footprint, and we would have to replace something inside to put one in."

Sheetz also pointed out a conflict with hours of operation, seeing as how convenience stores are typically 24/7 businesses and alcohol sales are limited.

"We would want it to be open extended hours, not necessarily 24 hours a day," Sheetz said. "The PLCB requires that it only be open the hours they are open."

Inventory would also be under the control of the PLCB. "They would get all of the money. We would maybe get some more traffic," Sheetz said. "It is intriguing as a divestiture from the norm. We had some initial interest but not today."

The wine kiosks are present in more than 30 supermarkets and were approved for 24 Walmarts, including the one in Altoona, last week, notes the newspaper.
