McLEAN, VA - In an effort to grab market share in the trendy food truck craze, hotels are setting up high-end hotel food trucks that extend their on-site restaurant fare, USA Today reports.
Among the hotels setting their food truck wheels in motion:
- The Setai Hotel in Miami's South Beach last year opened the Beach Kiosk, a beachside food truck that serves items from the hotel??s Michelin-starred restaurant ?" ceviche, Wagyu hot dogs and salmon burgers.
- The SLS Hotel South Beach, opening next month, will have a stationary, poolside food truck run by celebrity chef Jose Andres.
- The Auberge Saint-Antoine in Quebec City is looking to open a second food truck. The first, Panache Mobile, operates at a nearby vineyard and sells lobster rolls, tartare and focaccia sandwiches.
"Convenience has been and will continue to be a very important driver of restaurant industry growth," says Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of research for the National Restaurant Association. "Hotels are expanding on food service, in general. A logical step would be mobility of the restaurant platform."
Riehle added that hotel food trucks expand their restaurants beyond travelers to the local community. "Food trucks have proved to be a very good way to extend the brand," he said. "It's a good test vehicle."
