MIAMI – Burger King is preparing to step into the future with plans to launch a mobile payment option at U.S. units starting next month, Bloomberg reports. The second-largest burger chain by location has developed an app to let customers buy Whoppers with a smartphone. The program should be in all units by summertime. Bryson Thornton, spokesman for Burger King, also indicated that the app may expand to include online ordering for in-store pickup.

QSR chains have been scrambling to launch loyalty programs and smartphone apps to capture younger consumers. For example, McDonald’s has tested McD, a coupon app , while Dunkin’ Donuts recently debuted a rewards program at U.S. locations earlier this year.

“What younger consumers are looking for is the ability to use their phones to do everything,” said Darren Tristano, executive vice president at Technomic Inc. “The cell phone has replaced the wallet.”

The BK app would provide customers with coupons, nutrition facts and a way to pay via a virtual card. Around 19% of U.S. consumers using a mobile devices to order food from a restaurant, and that number is expected to rise among the Plural and Millennial generations.

Burger King has been struggling to lift same-store sales recently with new menu items, such as adding Satisfries to its children’s meals. U.S. and Canadian same-store sales increased 0.2% during the fourth quarter, after sagging during the previous three quarters of 2013.
