SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Family-dining restaurant chain Denny??s opened its first standalone Fresh Express at the California State University in San Bernardino, Nation??s Restaurant News reports.

The chain had been testing the concept as a grab-and-go counter in its traditional restaurants. The new Fresh Express offers made-to-order breakfast items such as Grand Slam breakfasts, Grand Slamwich or Chipotle Prime Rib Breakfast Burrito. The unit also makes Denny??s new Better Burgers and panini sandwiches. Fresh Express has a smoothie bar and a grab-and-go cooler stocked with takeout meals.

Denny??s plans to open more Fresh Express stores on college campuses, as well as other nontraditional places. A second Fresh Express will open in August at the University of Idaho.

"Denny??s Fresh Express was developed with on-trend branding and design elements to complement our great food," said Greg Powell, Denny??s vice president of concept innovation. "We intend to expand the idea of the stand-alone Fresh Express to airports and other college campuses."
