ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Protecting data has become a top concern for any retailer in today’s technical environment. Two panelists answered retailer concerns during yesterday’s NACS Show Speaker Chat: Technical Tools for Data Protection.

Paul Truitt, chief security officer at SageNet, recapped the key takeaways from the popular NACS Show educational session. The top four things to keep in mind in data protection are:

  • Understand the threats
  • Gooey middles are bad
  • Layer your security
  • People and process are important too

One chat attendee asked how retailers know if the data protection tools employed are working. Mark Carl, CEO of EchoSat, Inc., reiterated that the No. 1 thing was to “know where your threats are. … Remote access is one of the biggest threats out there, so having someone assigned specifically to review security and to moderate logging is crucial.”

Truitt added that “by the time you see data exiting your firewall, it’s too late. Having the right tools and logging in place as well as having the right people reviewing those loggings is critical.”

Another attendee wanted to know the No. 1 emerging threat to the convenience store industry. Truitt pointed to the Internet of Things, which connects everything from appliances to HVAC systems to computers. “There is a full set of potential risks involved but those risks aren’t treated as such,” he said.
