The drugstore chain has linked Foursquare check-ins with in-store and product coupons.

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Walgreens has continued its partnership with Foursquare to give shoppers instant coupons, Social Times reports. When customers enter Walgreens and check in via Foursquare, a coupon is sent to their mobile phone.

Walgreens has given coupons out before when shoppers checked in with Foursquare. In March 2011, the drugstore had its inaugural campaign that gave customers 15% off sale items and 20% off Walgreens branded products. The success of that campaign triggered the company??s foray into specific coupons for certain stores.

The drugstore uses the promotions to collect information about those shoppers and is looking into whether such promos can drive particular product sales at specific locations. Walgreens isn??t sharing how many customers use the program, but it appears that it??s testing customer response to the program.

Walgreens has its own app, which garnered half a million installations in December 2011. Coupons are sent via that app as well. Experts predict that the company is keeping a close eye on the Foursquare promotions to see if traffic and sales warrant signing of a more permanent deal.

The first coupon in the current campaign is half-off Arizona Ice Tea, which ends March 10. Walgreens has other coupons lined up in the coming months.
