TOKYO – FamilyMart Co. and UNY Group Holdings Co., the operator of Circle K Sunkus stores, are considering a merger that would create Japan's second-largest convenience store chain, reports Reuters.

"It's true we are discussing various management options, but at this point nothing is decided," a FamilyMart spokesman told the news source.

The merged companies would have annual revenue of 2.81 trillion yen ($23.4 billion), eclipsing Lawson Inc., the third largest c-store chain in Japan, and close in on Seven & i Holdings Co.’s 7-Eleven stores’ 3.78 trillion yen.  FamilyMart and UNY have a combined 17,599 stores throughout Japan, followed by 7-Eleven’s 17,491 stores.
