Frito-Lay Debuts Quieter SunChips Bag in Canada

After the debacle of its compostable, but noisy, previous attempt, the company hopes its new version will fine more favor.

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Frito-Lay has reformulated its compostable SunChips bag to make munching on its chips a quieter experience, the Canadian Press reports. Nearly two years ago, the company unveiled its biodegradable bag for the chip line only to rack up massive consumer complaints about its noise.

In the United States, Frito-Lay ditched the environmentally friendly version for the original bag while it worked on a quieter version. However, Canadians were more willing to put up with the noisier bag while the company worked on a more silent one, so SunChips continued to be sold in the compostable bags.

The company has finally discovered a way to make the bags quieter by using an adhesive to create a noise barrier of sorts. The new design drops the decibel level around 10 points, putting it even with its original packaging and most other bags of chips.

"Canadians told us back in 2010 that the value to our environment was worth the noise, so we kept the bag on store shelves at that time, but we promised to continue our quest to evolve the bag. This new compostable bag will be available for all of our SunChips flavors in Canada in the coming weeks," said Sebastian Brandt, director at PepsiCo Foods Canada.

In the United States, the new biodegradable bag will be used on the plain SunChips variety. Frito-Lay will wait to see how it??s received by U.S. consumers before rolling it out to other flavors or product lines.
