Amazon Go Will Stock Alcohol

The retailer’s convenience store will soon begin selling wine and beer at the Seattle location.

SEATTLE – Amazon Go has applied to sell alcohol at its Seattle location, Fortune reports. The convenience store concept was revealed in December, although the store isn’t open to the public yet.

Amazon Go will offer prepared foods and grocery staples, much like traditional convenience stores. The retailer said that its products are from national brands and local merchants. The store will also stock the retailer’s own meal kits. Customers scan their smartphones at the store entrance, then an app tracks the virtual shopping cart—including what items are put back on the shelf.

To adhere to alcohol buying laws, Amazon indicated it would have staff on the floor to verify identification of buyers. “When we start offering beer and wine, there will be an associate checking identification,” said an Amazon spokesperson to Recode.
