TORONTO – DVD and Blu-ray rental company Redbox is ending its Canadian operations and pulling its 1,400 rental kiosks out of the country, reports the Globe and Mail.

“You’ll be able to continue renting movies until February 13, 2015, and the last day you’ll be able to return them is March 5, 2015,” notes the company’s website. “We were excited to bring our service here, but unfortunately, demand just didn’t meet our expectations. We will be focusing our attention on our U.S. business, where demand for physical media remains strong.”

Company president Mark Horak told the news source most of the kiosks and their contents are expected to be returned to the United States by the end of March. Redbox launched in Canada in mid-2012 and set up most of its kiosks at grocery and convenience stores.

Outerwall Inc., parent company of Redbox and Coinstar, said its Redbox business in Canada “is not meeting the company’s performance expectations.”
