A Salad Isn’t Always a Salad

Canadian news source says that McDonald's kale salad has more calories, fat and sodium than a Double Big Mac.

NEW YORK – CBC News in Canada reports that some of McDonald’s “nutrient-enhanced meals” are comparable to junk food.

For example, one of the new kale salads at McDonald’s locations in Canada has more calories, fat and sodium than a Double Big Mac. And the "Keep Calm, Caesar On" chicken salad, made with a “nutrient-rich lettuce blend with baby kale," can top out at 730 calories, 53 grams of fat and 1,400 milligrams of sodium.

Obesity expert Dr. Yoni Freedhoff told the news source that McDonald’s is attempting to appeal to consumers who want to "feel like they're not making such terrible choices,” adding that words such as kale “can help do that.”

However, customers can modify many of McDonald's menu items to make them healthier. "[They] have the choice to have a salad with or without dressing, select a burger without the bun, choose their chicken protein crispy or grilled,” McDonald’s spokesperson Adam Grachnik told the news source, adding that nutritional information for all menu items is posted online.

"Eating at McDonald's can fit into a balanced lifestyle," he said. “You just have to ask the crew to reduce sodium, fat or calories to best suit the customers' needs.”
