FAA Says ‘No’ to Beer Drone

Local Minnesota brewer is prohibited from delivering cold brews to ice fishermen via drone.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has nixed plans by a Minnesota brewer to use drones to replenish the beer stocks of ice fishermen, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The FAA informed Lakemaid Beer that it prohibits small businesses from using drones shortly after the brewer posted an online video documenting a test run on Lake Waconia last week.

Lakemaid president Jack Supple said the company had been testing a drone delivery system for 12-packs of beer on ice fishing lakes in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The company had planned additional tests for Lake Mille Lacs and the Twin Pines resort before it received notice from the FAA.

Supple said the company was inspired by Amazon, which last year announced it was exploring ways to deliver packages with drones. However, the company faces the same FAA restrictions as Lakemaid.

The FAA is expected to release new drone regulations next year.
