INDIANAPOLIS, IN - In an effort to make convenience stores safer, a group of Central Indiana convenience store employees will meet later this month with police and industry experts to pool ideas, Indiana Public Media reports.

Scot Imus, Executive Director of the Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association (IPMCSA) is working with the Indiana Department of Labor in developing the summit, which he said would focus on effective ways to deter robbers by eliminating their (cash) incentives.

"I think you've seen the industry change a lot over the last several years with better sight lines, better lighting, better security cameras," Imus said. "But the most important thing is cash handling policies. There is not money in the cash register at convenience stores."

Imus said it??s not a one-size-fits all solution and what is effective for one city may not work in another. But he said he hopes to compile a best practices document and to assemble a task force to create a safety plan that can be implemented.
