Toyota Moves Up Fuel-Cell Car Launch to 2015

Engineers make faster progress than expected and the vehicles already have logged more than a million test miles in North America.

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – WardsAuto reports that Toyota will offer a fuel-cell car in the U.S. in 2015, earlier than originally planned, because of the quick progress its engineers have made developing the car.

The car manufacturer made its announcement earlier this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Toyota’s yet-unnamed vehicle will be a four-door midsize car with a range of about 300 miles. Acceleration from 0 to 100 mph will be in the 10-second range.

Technological advancements have enabled Toyota engineers to reduce the cost of the car’s fuel-cell powertrain and hydrogen storage tanks by roughly 95% compared with those used on the Highlander fuel-cell demo vehicle in 2002.
