MIAMI – Yesterday, Burger King unveiled what it hopes will be its secret weapon: a new, five-item meal for $4, USA Today reports. The fast-food chain is scrambling to catch up with rivals McDonald’s McPick 2 and Wendy’s 4 for $4 deals.

Burger King’s promotion provides small fries, a small drink, four chicken nuggets, a chocolate chip cookie and a bacon cheeseburger. The new deal is part of the chain’s “strategy of bringing people into our restaurants with great tasting food at an accessible price point,” said Alex Macedo, president for Burger King in North America.

McDonald’s McPick offers two of the following items for $2: small fries, mozzarella sticks, McDouble and McChicken. The company first said the McPick 2 would run for five weeks, but it has already indicated the promotion will drive sales. Testing has shown customers are not trading down for the less expensive items.

Over at Wendy’s, its 4 for $4 deal includes small fries, a small drink, a junior bacon cheeseburger and four chicken nuggets. Wendy’s launched its deal last year ahead of the other burger chains.

These days, customers seeking value have spurred more than burger chains to offer low-cost meals. Pizza Hut announced this week seven items for $5 each as long as the customer buys two or more.
