Chevron Plans to Bring Apple Pay to the Pump

Despite much-quoted tweet, company claims there is no specific timeline for launch.

January 05, 2015

SAN RAMON, Calif. – Last week, in a tweet heard ‘round the Internet, Chevron responded to a customer who said he would like to use Apple Pay to pay at the pump. The company’s 106-character response, “We are working alongside Apple to develop solutions to integrate with Apple Pay at the pump by early 2015” was immediately covered by sites such as MacRumors.com.

Chevron is an early Apple Pay partner, listed as one of Apple's supporters when the service first launched in October, and Apple Pay is already accepted in-store at Chevron and Texaco gas stations. As the only gas stations accepting Apple Pay, Chevron and Texaco may be able to get a leg up on the competition by luring iPhone users looking for a more convenient way to pay for gas purchases.

Not long after the tweet went viral, a Chevron spokesperson clarified that a potential timeline for the rollout of Apple Pay at the pump remains unclear, and there is no official early 2015 launch planned. The company also plans to continue to roll out in-store Apple Pay support to 3,000 stores this year.
