January 2, 2018

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Conexxus,  has released a new white paper “Resources and Guidance for EMV Implementation in a C-Store Environment.”  This paper brings together educational information, frequently asked questions, and links to valuable resources for convenience store operators who are looking to implement EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) in the United States.

While many EMV resources exist, the resource links included in the document were found to be the most helpful and relevant to merchants in the convenience and fuel retailing industry. This document provides information on:

  • EMV Basics: Information and answers to commonly asked questions regarding EMV.
  • Up Front Decisions: There are many decisions that must be made in advance of EMV implementation.  This section covers some of these common areas, such as debit routing, contactless, optimizing transactions, fallback and manual entry.
  • Cardholder Data Considerations: Clarifies the role EMV plays in protecting cardholder data.
  • Testing and Certification: Basic information regarding testing and certification of an EMV implementation.
  • Ongoing Care and Maintenance: There are some processes that require ongoing management. This section covers some of those areas, including chargebacks and kernel maintenance.

Other considerations for topics that may be applicable to a c-store operator’s business include:

  • ATMs
  • Unattended payment terminals
  • Tips and gratuities if a retailer also has a restaurant or provides other services where tipping is allowed
  • Processing card not present transactions (i.e., a retailer who accepts phone or online transactions)
