The “Minority Report” 16 Years on.... Today’s Digital Signage Capabilities

​I had the opportunity to present on the topic of digital signage recently at our annual NACS Convenience Summit Europe (www.conveniencesummit.com) in London. Thinking about how the consumer’s path to purchase became digitalised over the last decade made me recall the 2002 movie “Minority Report” with Tom Cruise. Remember all the “futuristic” advertising he was exposed to when walking the through the mall? Holographic advertising, face recognition based personalised ads, advertising, projected into thin air and on glass, ... combing through the internet today, looking for the latest developments, all this is not just not so far away, it all is readily available: companies that offer projection on glass fronts, devices that mimic holographic effects, technology that projects images into the sky, facial recognition, ...
Sure, not everything is needed or makes sense to install in a convenience store. But with an increasingly digital consumer and them getting used to basically everything being digital, their expectation of an in-store experience will become more digital too... as the technology is out there, the question is when will your stores embrace the digital change?
